Being an aggressive macho male with six pack abs doesn't mean that you will always get that hot girl, for according to a new study - there are other factors also in play which gives even someone with a beer belly to win hearts of that hot blonde.
Researchers have for long been puzzled by the knowledge that if aggression makes men more likely to father kids, then all males should be selected to be very aggressive. However, this is not the case.
A study on female behavior across species noted that the females of the species sometimes chooses males who do not fight and at sometimes chooses males for no obvious reason.
This, they say, may help explain the large variation in aggressiveness in most species, including humans. One reason for this variation, they added, could be that no fighting strategy works all the time.
"We found that even the most genetically aggressive males can have an Achilles heel, and lose against males who are (for the most part) wimps," study leader Harischandra Srivastava, from the University of Lucknow.
"There's no single way to win a fight, or win mates. Females didn't necessarily prefer aggressive males -- some males mated less when they had nice physique, but some males mated more if they didn't fight. The only factor we found out that female preferred those mates who had some nice standing in the society or the group in which they live. In some species it is body, some sharpness and in human's it's money and position" he added.
The research team also included Rohan Pawar of University of Pune and Ahmed Patel, professor of molecular and computational biology at Delhi University.
