We are Indians and we have grown up. And how!! We are living in the 21st century today and we go to malls for shopping instead of visiting the friendly baniya next door.
Our women have come out of the century old purdah system. They wear 2 inch-cleavage-showing Tops and navel-revealing jeans. They go to work today in automobile factories like how Sudha Murthy did many years back. Ours
is a modern society as any developing country could be. Incidents like Sati,
which once made us ashamed are now gone barring a few stray cases that get reported.
Although being a modern society, we still value our
traditions and are still stuck to our familys' views. We wear trousers to the temple and listen to Asharaam Bapu on IPod if the Puja is done at home. We still stick to hierarchichal caste and its credo.
Our Mardaaniyaan are free today, they can study as much as they
want to, take up any job they want to provided, they also cook and wash for the family, take care of the childrens' homework and remember when the next joint-family function is and for what purpose. As a young unmarried woman whenever they try to express their feelings for someone, we nip such silly n stupid feelings
in the bud and get them married off to the cheapest bidder, in our society.
In case we are not able to nip their desires in the bud, and then we force ourselves to take some action like killing them or simply kill their love interest and sometimes both of them. We then call it as "Honour Killing".
It is a Killing that we do to save the honor of our family and society. As an honorable judge quoted recently "The murder was an honour killing by the accused persons as they did not like their sister's affair with a boy of a different caste and they could never accept her plans to marry him."
This is our society and this is our culture. For us a family grows only when a boy is born and honour is only maintained by a girl. When 70 years old Bachan Kaur Athwa kills her granddaughter Surjit Kaur for loving someone who was not of their status, she keeps the family honour intact. To hell with the girl, how could we have let a paraya 20 year's hormone tarnish a family?

When Surjit (Left standing) ran away with a taxi driver and married him, Bachan Karu ( left bottom) was left with no other option then getting her killed to save the honour of thier family.

When Riznaur was killed in Kolkata for marrying Priyanka Todi, it was a death he had called for. How dare he marry a high caste Hindu girl from a rich family. All means were used to dissuade him from the girl. All principles of "Sam,dam, dand and bhed" were applied. He and his family were offered even the option of converting to Hindu, but they refused, leaving no other otption for his killers.
Only if Priyanka would have understood the sentiments of the society and not fallen in love , this poor muslim boy could have been saved by the clutches of the society.
When a 20 year old guy named Nitish Katara is killed, he is killed because he crossed his limits by having an affair with Bhart Yadav. Bharti is daughter of D.P. Yadav a powerful politician of OBC community in UP, while Nitish was part of a middle class family. Our society doesn’t allow such combination’s to take palace.Today's youth should understand this and control their emotions.
For them "love" is only for watching on the 70 MM screen. We like to cheer when Raj and Simran unite on the screen, but in reality we try everything to stop such things. For Love is only nice to hear in Folklore. We rejoice in the watching of Laila-Majnu, Shirn-Farhad while reminding our future generations that they should not emulate such feats in real life.
