In the tradition bound state of Tamilnadu some startling facts have come out to the fore that typifies the hypocrisy that rules our nation most and more so in the land of the Tamils. Masters in the art of hypocrisy the surprising, not to me, fact is that women, yes ladies, of Tamilnadu guzzle more 'sarakku' aka booze than their male counterparts. Do not be misled by the crowd of the males standing in front of the 'oyin' aka wine shops. Most of them are making the buy for some woman who could be the primary wife or the second or the third. It depends on who provides the 'dabbu' aka money. The male of the species despite the macho obligatory handlebar upper growth on the face is a rather hen-pecked creature when it comes to having a tipple.
A survey commissioned by OU in a sample size of 1000 came up with some startling facts. It revealed that amongst persons aged over 18 years, about 32 percent women consume alcohol in the state, as compared to about 26 percent of men. Subramanian, head of our survey team, said, “We found out that this 32.13 percent of women and 26.29 percent of men belong to all economic sections. Some of the interviewees attributed physical and mental stress as the reason for consuming alcohol and a few from the upper strata of society stated that they gulp liquor to maintain their status in society.” Another revelation is that 22.62 percent of women and 42.67 men smoke. Women have also outnumbered their male counterparts in gambling.
Another mind-numbing statistic thrown up by the survey was the fact that 55.41 and 56.07 percent women have attributed television and love for creating greater impact on them physiologically, compared to 30.31 percent and 43.16 percent of men respectively. More women believe in God than their male counterparts. About 99.34 percent of women had stated that they trust in God and 69.36 percent of men have given positive reply. So the next time you see a lungi-clad man guzzling 'sarakku' and looking for 'oorga' aka pickles and idli and stumbling upon his lungi that has come undone and falling down on his own puke, pity the woman who sent him and is waiting for her tipple till he wakes up and meanders his way home, gets thrashed by the tongue and as punishment is starved for the night while she goes to her secondary mate for the night.

It appears that the survey was conducted by someone who's had one too many !! I dont think TN is any different from the rest of India.Women very rarely turn to booze or ciggies no matter what the situation and have tremendous toleration .Women in high society may resort to it just for the sake of appearing hep but not coz they cant cope with pressure.The simple reason being women are a lot smarter and don't need any crutches !! |
