When she was just a hop, skip and a jump away, in 1999, Sonia G was denied the coveted prize of the PM's kursi by the diminutive Mulayam who did'nt provide the crucial 4 legged support. Since then a long time has passed and the equations, compulsive though in their dynanics have become as static as the still-dead waters of the polluted Yamuna which has become soul-less thanks to the dirty sullage of Raajniti being dumped into it by the 526 members of the Lok Sabha. Narasimha Rao, considered by the intellectually-bereft, to be the modern Chanakya, would be chuckling in his abode wherever the politicians go, in the after-life. May his soul rest in peace.
In 1999 Mulayam Singh was the most wanted man among the cadres of all parties and that today he is the most most sought after reflects the desperation of all and sundry of the nightmare of early elections. He was the destroyer of everything he surveyed then but today he is considered to be the savior. He was the king of UP and proudly exclaimed at the drop of a hat, that "UP mein hai Dum".Today when he is out of power and Behanji Mayawati appears to be in total control it is he who needs who needs help to come to power in UP and ironically he needs all the support he can give to the power-center in Delhi.
It has been widely rumoured by the Mainstream media, who have brought up the post-independent India, on a steady narcotic of cheap politics and not himan interest stories that pep the morning cuppa, that Sonia G never forgets a slight, however old it may be. But the Italiano Sposa[Italian bride] has grudgingly grown over the years and begun to understand the mindset of the political opportunists of Inda; she knows how difficult it will be coming back to power again unless she has some "good" allies. The rising inflation has made her task more difficult. The only way out is to obtain quick-fixed brokered alliances, sign the treaty and then declare itself herself a Martyr, once again. And we the suckers that we are will bring out our tissue-papers, wipe the solitary tear and stamp on the Hand that shows our bonded yolk to the Nehru-Gandhi family. We love to be ruled rather rule ourselves.
The only coterie who seem to be out of this cosy atom of nuclear politics are the Communist parties. They have tried everything from declaring the treaty to be anti-national, to anti-Muslim failing in their miserable attempt to convince a single person to switch over to their side. The only thing they gained is an obnoxious nasty reputation, as one Autowallah in Mumbai exclaimed "Karat paisa khaya hai Cheena se "(Karat has taken money from China). The loss of the sagacity of Surjeet Singh and the non-participation of Basu is being sorely felt at the Writers building. With rising fuel prices, the whole country has come to believe that the 123 treaty would apply some balm on their sorrows and supply some more energy to this fuel starved nation. From being one of the most powerful leaders in India, he has become a scabied mongrel in the manger. A tabloid wondered on its evening edition that Brinda is considering a seperation!!
Karat may still retain his party, but the one person who must be at a total loss of words at this new grouping is Amitabh Bachchan. He must be wondering aloud while he sits on his morning throne of expunging toxic waste from his body about the perceived wrong he appears to have done; that a nuclear treaty between two countries has made him sit on a throne of cactus rather than cool porcelain. So, will Bade Bhaiya follow the footsteps of Chote Bhaiya and sing "UP mein hoga Mayawati ka raaj kam, kyunki Sonia madam hai hamare sang". So will the best man at Sonia's wedding would again become the best man for SP and Congress's wedding? We have seen a lot of political parties hissing venom and then kissing and making up. As a side bar the aam-junta of India's eyes will be on when the Jaya-Sonia embrace will occur and if it does, will it be repeatedly shown as 'breaking news' on National television?.Apart from the Bachhan's there are some additional add ons'. One of them is Amar Singh.More recognized as the fighting face of SP he has not minced words while speaking about India's videshi bahu in political rallies.
All of us remember the incident at the function organized to celebrate UPA's four years in power, the surprise visitor was Amar Singh. But when he actually came in and went to greet his friends, the Karats, who were seated on the same table as Sonia G, there was not even a customary exchange of glance between the two. Sonia continued eating from her plate while Amar Singh shook hands with everyone on the same table. Those who know Sonia G well claim that she is not one to forget perceived slights in a hurry, after all said and done, she is a woman. But will she forget for the sake of her party is a million dollar question. What is ironical is that Amar Singh who shook hands with the Karat's are now rivals and Sonia G who didn't spare him a glance him is offering to shake his hands!!
Another question which hangs in the balance is will Sonia G do what Kokila ben was unable to do. The Indian world knows Anil's closeness with SP and Mukesh's with Congress.So will RIL and ADA come under one flag to underwrite this marraige financially. The fall-out of all this could be the possible burying the hatchet between Big B and SRK and sharing the same dais.It would be worth watching to see too many "Talwar's" in one "Mayaan",
With so many variables in this upcoming marriage, what would be the fate of such a marriage of convenience? What probably could be the dowry that Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh will ask for in return to bail the Congress out at this juncture?

Political “dealmakers” have entered the scene at a time when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is determined to proceed with the Indo-US nuclear deal despite strong opposition from the Left.
While the Samajwadi Party is moving closer to the Congress and the Shiv Sena is supporting the nuclear deal, the CPI(M) said Dr Singh’s presence at the G-8 summit in Japan next week will be taken as an indication of the government’s intention to go ahead with the deal, and that would be a factor in their meeting on July 4 to decide on withdrawal of support to the UPA coalition.
CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said: “We have been told that the Prime Minister was stubborn that he will go to Japan (G-8 summit) only if he is allowed to go forward with the deal. So, the Prime Minister going to Japan will be an indicator that he is going forward on the deal.” According to Left sources, the moment Dr Singh goes to Japan, the Left parties will go to the President and give letters of withdrawal of support.
They expect the government to approach the International Atomic Energy Agency between July 9 and 15 after Dr Singh returns from Japan.
If UPA insiders are to be believed, the SP is bargaining for Cabinet portfolios as the price of support to the government.
The other non-Left par ties will support the government because of convenience, not conviction, the UPA insiders said.
SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, who arrived here from Lucknow, declared his party had “no political enemies”. Dr Manmohan Singh, who has emerged stronger on this issue by compelling the Congress and its allies to desert the Left, on Tuesday met President Pratibha Patil and is believed to have discussed the political impasse. The meeting lasted about 50 minutes.
NCP president Sharad Pawar met Mr Karat on Monday. He also met external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee before leaving for Dubai.
After the ice-breaking meeting between SP leader Amar Singh and Mr Mukherjee, RJD leader Lalu Prasad proclaimed openly that Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav is with the UPA.
“Sarkar bi rahega, deal bi chalega (The government will survive and so will the deal),” he told reporters here when asked to comment on the Congress-Left standoff.
His comments came hours after a meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi during which he is understood to have conveyed Mr Mulayam Singh’s terms and conditions.
Asked about the possibility of the SP supporting the UPA government, he said, “We are together and will remain together always.” The Congress had been trying to woo SP ever since the Left hardened its stance on the deal.

In view of the fact that there is hardly any time left for operationalising
the deal during the tenure of the incumbent Bush administration, the
obstinate insistence of Manmohan Singh to go ahead with the process is
pretty mysterious. For he cannot just be unaware of it.
There are thereby strong reasons to suspect that he, together with a section
of the Congress Party, is trying to use the deal as an alibi to cause a
decisive break with the Left regardless of its likely impact on the
forthcoming poll outcome.
That's pretty disturbing
