Hung Assembly?
Irrespective of the fact whether Congress or BJP emerges as the single largest Party, it would be comic if a hung assembly turned up in Karnataka. A hung assembly with JD(S) again emerging as the single largest party would be extremely comical!!
The duo of father and son made both Congress and BJP dance to their tunes during the last assembly. It was the typical case of "Ek Phul Aur Do Mali", where both the parties were vying each other for Gowda's attention.
Both parties danced to the father-son duo's tunes and left after crying rape when they were ditched in favor of the other. The sleeping PM as he was called, Gowda showed both the national parties who actually was the real sleeper.
That is why it would be comical for JD(S) to be again in decisive role, for it will be fun to see both the parties again courting the same suitor, whom they have declared as untouchable in the run-up to the elections.
A Hung assembly shows the real character of the political parties, for a party which manages to hang to the power is the real party to vote.
Also it forces the government of the day to perform on a day to day basis, for they do not know when the next election can sweep in. Also the amount of entertainment and TRP's the leasers provide can give any of the leading filmmakers/TV serials a run for their money.
The dossier also contains information about assets and liabilities of these candidates.
The Bharatiya Janata Party tops the list of candidates, with 13 of its candidates having criminal records. Leading the group is former minister B. Sreeramulu, who is facing serious charges like attempt to murder and dacoity. Nine of the Congress Party members have criminal charges followed by the Janata Dal (Secular).
KEW is part of the Association of Democratic Rights, an Ahmedabadbased non-political, nonpartisan group of professors of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and the National Institute of Design (NID). The objective of the ADR is to work to improve governance and strengthen democracy in India.
In the first phase, 19 women candidates were in the fray.
However, the number has come down to 14 in the second phase. The Bahujan Samaj Party fielded four while the BJP, the Dal (S) and the Congress have fielded two each.
The Congress Party’s Anil Lad, who has shown Rs 172.72 crores, tops the list of candidates with high assets followed by former minister R.V.
Deshpande, who is contesting from Haliyal.
Many candidates who failed to quantify their assets have been categorised as candidates with zero assets.
KEW observed that the overall quality of candidates left much to be desired. A lot of candidates are industrialists from the real estate, liquor, mining and other sectors.
The average assets of candidates from the major parties was Rs 4.18 crores, which means that the parties have turned their backs on candidates with low assets.
