In a major breakthrough in mass storage devices, Sony whooo corporation of China announced launch of Onion disks and drives. The disk & drive named and shaped after the bulbous vegetable, has been inspired by the onion itself.

The disk although in shape of regular DVD or CD Disk, contains a coating of a totally new material developed by the company.

The main property of the disk is that each disk contains multiple layers of each coating. Once you have written over a layer you can peel it off and write on the next layer. It is similar to each layer of onion, which you can peel of them. "It saves a lot of time and money and you don’t have to go to market everytime to buy a new disc. Each disk can contain upto maximum 10000 layers.” said the spokesperson.

The main advantage of Onion Disks is that they use shorter wavelength (100 nm). Substantially more data can be stored on a Onion Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser. The minimum "spot size" on which a laser can be focused is limited by diffraction, and depends on the wavelength of the light and the numerical aperture of the lens used to focus it. By decreasing the wavelength, increasing the numerical aperture from 0.60 to 0.85 and making the cover layer thinner to avoid unwanted optical effects, the laser beam can be focused to a smaller spot. This allows more information to be stored in the same area. In addition to the optical improvements, Onion Discs feature improvements in data encoding that further increase the capacity.

Apart from this revolutionary breakthrough, the company is also launching Onion drives, to read the Onion disks and write over them. "All the Onion drives will be dual in nature i.e they can read and write both. We don’t want to bleed our customers like our competitors who give both variants." added the company spokesperson.

The biggest advantage of Onion Disc is that they cost same as the DVD discs.
